Taxpayers feel they are being Shortchanged
KUALA LUMPUR: Tax refunds are in the mail for thousands of taxpayers, but there was no cheer for some who received less than what they had expected.

Entrepreneur Shirley Lai said she had overpaid RM1,500 in taxes in 2011 but only received a cheque for RM570, with a letter stating she was ineligible for the rest.

“I do not understand why I am ineligible. The letter did not give reasons and I want an explanation,” said Lai, 41.

Muthu Ghani, 35, was also baffled to receive less than the amount owed to him.

“There is a huge difference between what I calculated and the sum I received,” he said.

Both had filed their tax assessments through the Inland Revenue Board's (IRB) e-Filing system.
